Call me out if I’m wrong, but I don’t think those engines have ever been lauded for their power, efficiency, reliability. More German stuff for German stuff’s sake.

Yep...but it still had M-B branding on the valve cover and was marketed at the time as being ‘powered by Mercedes Benz’.

My wife and I rode around in one of those on Jeju island last year. It was reasonably comfy and spacious. It seemed to be a pretty common option for 4wd SUV there.
